CACREP, COAMFTE, and institutional accreditation are not treated as interchangeable. CACREP accredits counseling programs and specialties. COAMFTE accredits marriage and family therapy programs. Institutional accreditors evaluate the university as a whole. A counseling program can be designed to meet California licensure requirements without holding CACREP or COAMFTE accreditation.
1. Cal State Fullerton M.S. in Counseling
Cal State Fullerton offers one of the strongest combinations of public-university pricing, specialized counseling accreditation, and dual California clinical licensure preparation in Orange County.
The M.S. in Counseling is a 63-unit clinical mental health counseling program. CSUF states that its curriculum fulfills the educational requirements for California LPCC preparation and that the same course sequence also satisfies the educational requirements associated with LMFT preparation.
CACREP Accreditation Through 2031

CACREP Accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Concordia’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialty is currently CACREP-accredited. CACREP lists both Irvine and online delivery within the accredited program, with the program in a reaffirmation process and its current accreditation period extending through October 31, 2027.
“Reaffirmation in process” does not mean the program is unaccredited. It means CACREP is reviewing it for continued accreditation.

APU’s current catalog identifies the Orange County location for the MFT program and states that the clinical placement sequence is designed to meet California requirements associated with MFT and LPCC preparation.

Why Alliant Irvine Is Not Included as a New Student Option
Alliant International University has historically offered MFT education at its Irvine campus. However, Alliant’s current Project Evolve information says the university is winding down the Irvine branch campus as part of a broader campus transition.
The university states that it will continue supporting active and continuing students during the transition, with the Irvine branch expected to operate through the wind-down period.
